Fix Them Before They Spread Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down mmsys.cpl opens Windows’ classic Sound dialog, also known as Sound Properties or the Multimedia Properties Control Panel module. It is still available in Windows 11, even though the newer Settings app handles most everyday audio controls. Use the classic dialog when you need to manage playback or recording endpoints, edit device properties, assign Windows event sounds, or change the traditional communications behavior. The quickest route is to press Windows + R , type mmsys.cpl , and press Enter . What is mmsys.cpl? mmsys.cpl is a Windows .cpl Control Panel applet. The name refers to the Multimedia Properties module, but Windows normally displays the interface as Sound or Sound Properties . It is not an MMC snap-in. Therefore, mmc mmsys.cpl is the wrong command: mmc.exe is intended for MMC consoles and .msc files. Run the applet directly, through control.exe , or with the generic Control Panel launcher. The classic window normally contains four tabs: Playback — speakers, headphones, HDMI audio, USB headsets, and other output devices. Depending on the computer, that can include internal speakers, a 3.5 mm headphone output, a USB headset, a monitor’s HDMI audio device, or a Bluetooth audio device. Select a device and choose Properties to view the controls exposed for that endpoint. The available pages vary by hardware and driver. One device may offer levels, formats, enhancements, or spatial-audio options while another exposes only a smaller set of controls. To rename a playback endpoint: Open the Playback tab. Select the device. Choose Properties . On the General tab, edit the friendly-name text box. This changes the stored name for that audio endpoint. It does not rename every endpoint that happens to use the same underlying pin category, and software that queries the driver directly may continue to show a different name. The Recording tab manages input endpoints such as built-in microphones, USB microphones, headsets, and line-in connections. Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down For microphone level controls, use this path: Select Recording . Select the microphone. Choose Properties . Open the Levels tab.

Adjust the available microphone or microphone-boost controls, then select OK . If a microphone is absent, disabled, disconnected, or not exposed correctly by its driver, it may not appear in this list at all. The Sounds tab assigns audio files to Windows program events. If you need the four-tab classic dialog, run mmsys.cpl or use Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings . A Search result labeled System settings is not the classic applet. More sound settings does nothing A temporary Settings-app problem can prevent the link from responding. Close and reopen Settings, then try again. Running mmsys.cpl directly bypasses that navigation link. A device is missing The applet can list only audio endpoints that Windows detects and exposes through the audio subsystem. Check whether the device is connected and enabled, and whether its driver is functioning. A disconnected USB headset, disabled microphone, or driver problem can all result in an absent endpoint. The driver and endpoint determine which tabs and controls are available. The absence of an Enhancements , Levels , or similar tab does not necessarily indicate a Windows error. The applet is blocked On a managed computer, an administrator may hide the Sound Control Panel item or restrict access to Settings and Control Panel.
