Lisa Gardner Biography:
After a brief stint in the food industry where she caught her hair on fire twice, Lisa Gardner started her career as a romantic suspense novelist, publishing her first book at the age of 20, while still in college. It took her three years and four re-writes to finally walk away with a finished product. She continued to write while earning her degree and during the spare time she acquired as a research analyst for an international consulting firm.
Under her pseudonym, Alicia Scott, Gardner wrote 13 books for Silhouette Intimate Moments. This softer, more romantic side of Lisa Gardner has since given way to a more mysterious and complex one, placing her books on the #1 New York Times bestsellers list. Lisa Gardner’s passion for criminal investigations, police procedures, and cutting edge technology grew from her job with the consulting firm. She has always had a love for suspense mysteries.
Gardner is inspired by such great authors as V.C. Andrews, Stephen King, and John Saul. Michael Connelly and Jeffrey Deaver are also among her favorites. In her mind, the creepier and darker, the better the story. When necessary, Gardner will also interview professionals in the law enforcement field to keep herself abreast of all the newest innovations and technologies used to fight crime.
She has interviewed a variety of people, including ATF Agents, FBI Agent, State Police, as well as correctional officers and local law enforcement personnel. True crimes are also a source of inspiration for Lisa Gardner. She loosely based The Other Daughter on Ted Bundy, who became a father while living out his sentence on Death Row. The Third Victim was based on a string of school shootings that had occurred in the United States just prior.
The Killing Hour’s eco-killer resembles the traits of Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. Lisa Gardner has a way of bringing her settings and characters alive. Her intense scenes and complex characters draw readers deeply into her novel. Her writing style emulates that of M.M. Kaye, whose book, Far Pavilions was by far Gardner’s favorite book during her tween years.
Lisa Gardner’s Books:
FBI Profiler Series:
This series of novels pair Officer Rainie Conner, a homicide investigator, with FBI Profiler, Pierce Quincy. Together, the duo face some of Bakersville, Oregon’s toughest criminals who have disrupted peace in the small, idyllic town. When the two detectives team up initially in The Third Victim, Agent Quincy helped bring justice to a man who was ultimately after Conner, saving her from being his next murder victim.
In the meantime, the secrets of her past are exposed, bringing back memories she was longing to forget. Things turned personal in The Next Accident, when the officer returned the favor and supported the investigation of Pierce Quincy’s daughter’s allegedly accidental death. Even though Agent Quincy is aware that his daughter had issues with alcohol, he also knew that her death was not the result of an accident.
With Amanda already dead, the killer is now in pursuit of Quincy’s only other daughter, Kimberly. Later in the series, Kimberly joins the FBI as a rookie agent as her father heads into retirement. The books in the FBI Profiler Series include: The Perfect Husband The Third Victim The Next Accident The Killing Hour Gone Say Goodbye
Detective D.D. Warren Series:
Boston’s top homicide detective, D.D. Warren, the star of the series, teams up with police sniper, Bobby Dodge, to capture murderers. They are particular savvy at getting into the minds of serial killers and preventing further murders from occurring. The thrillers in the Detective D.D. Warren series include: Alone Hide The Neighbor Live to Tell Love You More The Seventh Month (a novella) Catch Me Fear Nothing Stand Alones The Other Daughter The Survivors Club I’d Kill for That Touch & Go

Four of her bestsellers have been made into television and big-screen movies.
Gardner’s first novel, The Perfect Husband was made into a television movie called “Instinct to Kill” and featured actor Mark Dacascos. The movie aired in Germany. In 2004, Roma Downey, Jacqueline Smith, and Lauren Lee Smith starred in “The Survivors Club,” which aired as a CBS Movie of the Week. Seven years later, “Hide” was converted to the television screen, airing on TNT with Carla Gugino, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, and Kevin Alejandro.
Gardner’s books have also won her awards across the world. The International Thriller Writers of the United States recognized The Neighbor as a “The Best Hardcover Novel.” The book also earned accolades in France through the Grand Prix des lectrices de Elle, prix du policier. In 2000, the Romance Writers of America, or RWA, presented Lisa Gardner with the Daphne du Maurior Award for “The Other Daughter.”
To engage her readers, Lisa Gardner allows her loyal readers to nominate the next victim in the latest novel. She facilitates the “Kill a Friend, Maim a Buddy” Sweepstakes each year. Fans can enter the name of someone they would like to see killed — perhaps the name of an old boss or a childhood bully. Gardner will pick the Lucky Stiff who will be featured in her next story. For those living outside the United States, there is a “Kill a Friend, Maim a Mate” Sweepstakes which follows the same format.
Gardner also makes an effort to stay in touch with her readers through sponsoring a monthly contest. The contest generally requires readers to answer questions developed from previously published novels. Winners are selected each month to receive a free, autographed, hard copy of Lisa Gardner’s latest novel. Lisa Gardner currently lives in New Hampshire with her husband, an auto-racer, and daughter. She is often found writing in the company of her two highly conversational Shelties and a silly new puppy.
