Clary-N • 16,020 Reputation points • Microsoft External Staff • Moderator 2025-09-22T00:04:09.96+00:00 Hi dennis willoughby , Thanks again for your patience. I understand that this update has been a challenge for many users. Based on similar cases, installing the August 2025 cumulative update preview (KB5064081) first has helped resolve the issue. Once that update is installed and the system is rebooted, KB5065426 installs smoothly without errors. Additionally, some users have found it helpful to manually start or restart the following Windows services before applying the update: App Readiness Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Windows Update Here’s how to do that using the Services Console:1. Press Windows + R , type services.msc , and hit Enter . In the Services window, locate each of the services listed above. Right-click each one and choose Start or Restart . If the option is greyed out, open Properties , set Startup type to Automatic , then click Start . Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes or if you need further assistance. 0 votes

I completely understand how frustrating it can be when a system update fails, especially when the error message isn’t very clear. The error message you’re seeing — “We couldn’t update the system reserved partition” — typically means that the System Reserved Partition (SRP) doesn’t have enough free space for the Windows 11 update to proceed. This is a common issue, and we’ve outlined a step-by-step guide below to help you fix it. Step 1: Check SRP Size and Free Space Press Windows + R , type diskmgmt.msc , and press Enter. Locate the System Reserved Partition (usually 100–550 MB). If it has less than 15 MB free, proceed to the next steps. Step 2: Temporarily Disable BitLocker (if enabled) Go to Control Panel > BitLocker Drive Encryption . Click Suspend Protection for your system drive. Restart your PC. Step 3: Manually Clean SRP (Advanced Users) Mount the SRP using mountvol in Command Prompt. Delete unnecessary font files or language packs. Be cautious—deleting critical files may prevent your system from booting. Step 4: Retry the Update Go to Settings > Windows Update and try the update again. Alternatively, use the https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 . I understand how important it is to keep your system updated, and I'm here to help. The error you’re experiencing typically occurs when some Windows Update components or system files need to be refreshed. Besides, which Windows version are you using—Windows 11 or Windows 10? You can check by pressing Windows + R , typing winver , and pressing Enter (or go to Settings → System → About ). In the meantime, here are some steps you can try: Step 1: Reset Windows Update Components Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands one by one: net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc net stop bits net stop msiserver ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak net start wuauserv net start cryptSvc net start bits net start msiserver Restart your device to apply changes then check again Step 2: Repair System Files Run the following commands in Command Prompt (Admin) : sfc /scannow DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth Restart your device again Step 3: Clear the Windows Update Cache Corrupt update files in the cache can cause errors. Clear the cache by following these steps: Press Windows + R , type services.msc , and press Enter . Locate Windows Update , right-click it, and select Stop . Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution . Delete all files and folders inside this directory. Return to the Services window, right-click Windows Update , and select Start . I think the problem is something to do with the windows activation. I have two Microsoft accounts the old account has my MSFS2020 on it and my latter account has my win 11 activated digitally to it. But my MSFS2020 cannot be accessed on it. The only way I can try and install MSFS2020 is from my old account. It starts the install but when it gets up to the MSFS2020 updates it will download some of it the stop then drop back 1% or 2% the load them up again but stop at the same place and drop back again and just continues to do this until I shut it down. I would like to get Microsoft to transfer my MSFS2020 from my old account into my new account that windows is activated too and then try installing it from the same account. 0 votes Cenk Odabaşı • 20 Reputation points 2025-11-19T11:24:33.7766667+00:00 Followed all the steps however 2025-11 Security Update (KB5068861) (26200.7171) cannot be installed in my windows 11, it downloads, starts installation and fails. 0 votes Clary-N • 16,020 Reputation points • Microsoft External Staff • Moderator 2025-11-20T09:10:36.6233333+00:00 Hi Doug Cunniffe , Thank you for sharing the details and I completely understand how frustrating this must be after spending so much time and effort trying to resolve it. Doug Cunniffe • 0 Reputation points 2025-11-19T08:35:20.4866667+00:00 I have almost given up on this after spending about two weeks now and having Microsoft techs going remote on my PC and all they did was reinstall my Win 11 which has not fixed the problem. 0 votes

As forum moderators, we unfortunately don’t have the authority or tools to transfer licenses or make changes to Microsoft accounts. Please reach out to the Microsoft Support team again and explain the situation, including the two accounts and the activation details. Clary-N • 16,020 Reputation points • Microsoft External Staff • Moderator 2025-10-08T07:08:49.6866667+00:00 Hi, If the issue still persists, the last option I recommend is to back up your data and perform a clean installation of Windows . This will ensure that any corrupted system files or conflicts are completely removed. Below are the detailed steps for this process: Step 1: Back Up Your Data Files & Folders Copy important documents, photos, and videos to an external hard drive or cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.). Browser Bookmarks & Passwords Export bookmarks from your browser settings. Sync or export saved passwords if needed. Email & App Data Back up Outlook PST files or export emails if you use a local client. Software Keys & Licenses Note down your Windows product key (if applicable) and any software license keys. You can follow Microsoft’s official guide for more detailed instructions here: Backup, restore, and recovery in Windows Step 2: Create Installation Media On a working PC, go to the official Microsoft Download Page and download the Media Creation Tool . Insert a USB drive (minimum 8 GB). Run the tool and select Create installation media for another PC . Choose your language, edition, and architecture (64-bit recommended). Select USB flash drive and let the tool create the bootable media. Step 3: Install Windows (Clean Install) Insert the bootable USB into your PC and restart it. Enter BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F2 , F12 , or Del during startup). Set the USB drive as the first boot device and save changes. Boot from the USB and click Install Now . When asked, choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) . Select your primary drive (usually Drive 0), delete all partitions, and click Next . Windows will install on the unallocated space. * Disclaimer : At this point, we have exhausted all troubleshooting and I recommend that we try to perform a clean install to get your computer back into a working condition. Please ensure that you backup any important data, including Documents, Pictures, Videos, and more . Step 4: After Installation Complete the initial setup (language, region, Microsoft account). Connect to the internet and run Windows Update to install the latest updates. Reinstall your drivers (graphics, network, etc.) from the manufacturer’s website. Restore your backed-up files and reinstall your applications. Please let me know if you need any assistance during the process—I’m here to help. 7 comments Show comments for this answer rabaya emon • 5 Reputation points 2025-10-03T16:38:51.4166667+00:00 Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.26220.6690 (ge_release_upr) 1 vote shankar srivas • 5 Reputation points 2025-10-04T02:07:41.8966667+00:00 02:55:52:520 [CRITICAL] SharedConnection - Failed to open WinHTTP Session. Dawn Michelle Sharp • 5 Reputation points 2025-11-09T16:41:28.12+00:00 Hey guys! Thanks for the help of you have given. My system wouldn't update ever since the roll out. I didn't know a new OS was coming, so I just kept ignoring the "can't update" or "update failure" messages I kept receiving. Until this past week I thought I would go ahead and figure out what was up since I lost my touchscreen (still don't have it but I'm good for now), and wacom driver suddenly went out of date. Still need to check on that, but last night I was able to update my OS, took for ever. Never has taken 45 minutes to download and install but it was updated. So, that was nice. What finally worked to get it to update was using command prompt msdt.exe -id WindowsUpdateDiagnostic press Enter :Now. As soon as I typed that in and hit enter, switched to settings screen and it had already started without me. Thanks!! Not sure the original poster for that fix but it was an awesome fix for me!! Keep up the great work you guys do! It is definitely appreciated! 0 comments No comments

It’s a reliable way to resolve persistent system update issues without losing your data. Steps to perform an in-place upgrade on Windows: Download the Windows Installation Media Tool for your version of Windows. Run the Tool and Choose “Upgrade this PC now” Launch the Media Creation Tool and select “Upgrade this PC now” . This will begin the setup process. Accept the License Terms Follow the prompts and accept the license agreement. Choose “Keep personal files and apps” When prompted, select the option to keep your personal files and apps . This ensures your data and installed programs remain intact. Begin the Installation Click Install to start the upgrade. Your PC will restart several times during the process. Post-Upgrade Checks Once complete, verify that your system is updated and functioning correctly. Check for any remaining updates via Settings > Windows Update . * Disclaimer : Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications.
