How Do We Compare To Other Rental Companies?
In New Zealand, car rental companies have a legal requirement to offer the following basic rental car insurance cover :
— Collision Damage Waiver/Loss Damage Waiver
— Theft Protection
GO Rentals' number one priority is ensuring you have a stress-free car hire experience. That's why we have included extra cover for windscreen and tyre damage, third-party damage and injuries and 24-hour roadside assistance included in your Total Road Care package.
Simply add your car rental itinerary details to our booking widget and proceed to the checkout. Our GO Basic insurance option will be added as standard. If you wish to upgrade to GO Assured or GO peace of mind, select your package and the fee per day will be calculated and added to your booking. Upon pick-up, you will pay your security bond on a credit card if you have selected the GO basic or GO assured options. After the vehicle is returned, or 45 days from the bond’s authorisation on your card (whichever comes first), the bond amount is released. This process typically takes 5 - 10 business days. Please be aware that if there’s any damage to the vehicle during your rental period, or if we find damage during the check-in process, we will deduct the necessary excess payment from the pre-authorised bond amount.
Any additional drivers will need to be added to your booking and show their full licence in the branch before getting behind the wheel. You may be subjected to an additional driver fee. However, rest assured that they will be covered under the insurance option you select.
You will need a credit card with the main hirer’s name for your security bond, required at pick-up for the following: GO Basic Insurance. GO Assured Insurance, depending on vehicles where a bond may be required, please check with our reservations team for more information. Your bond will be paid back to you after the rental vehicle is returned, subject to no damages found.

Of course, you can cover your rental car excess with a third-party insurer. Every policy is different, but generally, we will charge you for your excess amount and you will claim this back from your rental vehicle excess insurance. We will still require a security bond from you for GO basic and GO assured.
If you already have rental car hire covered under your travel insurance policy, then this is great news. What this means (and of course, all travel insurance policies are different) is that in the event of any damage we will charge you for your excess amount if you are involved in an accident and you will claim this back from your travel insurance. We recommend that you read your travel insurance policy wording carefully. Some insurers will require you to upgrade to a reduced excess option and they may put many exclusions in your policy wording.
Although we provide a substantive rental vehicle insurance policy, there are some scenarios in which you won't be covered: There are a few roads that we won’t let our vehicles be driven on, these are: Ball Hutt Road (Mt Cook), Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Te Paki Stream Bed, the road to Macetown in the Queenstown Area, or any unformed road or any track or thoroughfare including gravel roads that is not officially designated a road, including any beach. Damage to the underbody of the rental vehicle isn’t covered by insurance and you’re liable for all costs associated with the damage. Damage caused by unauthorised additional drivers. Any loss or damage to the Hirer’s personal belongings. Damage or liability caused by the driver of the Vehicle when under the influence of alcohol or any drug. The driver was deemed reckless or dangerous. If the vehicle is operated outside of the rental term. Please note that these exclusions are a guide, the full list can be found in the terms and rental agreement, which is to be signed upon pick up.
