Humanities EXCEL Program Join the Humanities EXCEL program and intern at a community organization Humanities EXCEL fellows hold paid internships with community partner organizations and mentors who value their ideas and perspectives. This cohort program helps you develop career-ready and transferable skills for professional and community-focused work. It highlights the importance of a humanities degree in various career paths. The Humanities EXCEL program runs during the academic year, and Summer Humanities EXCEL runs during Summer Session in regional locations where a majority of Humanities students are from. Choose which program is right for you! You will practice reflecting on the humanistic lens and expertise you bring to your work that impact the community. You will nurture transferable, career-ready skills that prepare you to be socially just leaders in professional and community-engaged settings. Learning Outcomes: You will be able to articulate the relevance of your humanities degree in professional contexts or applications. You will identify two career-ready skills to focus on throughout your internship. You will be able to self-assess your abilities within these two skills. You will be able to produce an effective resume and cover letter that captures your fellowship experience. Get hands-on experience with an intensive 10-week, project-based paid internship at a nonprofit or public organization in Los Angeles County. You’ll earn a $4,000 scholarship and 10 units of academic credit while building skills you can use in any career. Summer Humanities EXCEL is part of UCSC’s Employing Humanities initiative, which helps you connect what you study to real-world work. This program is designed for students who plan to return to Los Angeles County for the summer, especially rising sophomores and juniors seeking meaningful professional experience without relocating. In-person, hybrid, or fully remote In-person or hybrid Academic Year, 10 hours/week (either September-June or January-June) June–August (10 weeks, 285 hours, approx 28 hours/week) Open in April for internships that begin in the fall; open in September for internships that begin in the winter Open in April for internships that begin in June Roles include ongoing support or routine duties and/or time-bound projects Time-bound project deliverable Student Employment, $20/hour, biweekly paychecks (requires work authorization) $4,000 Scholarship and 10 tuition-free summer session credits (does not require work authorization) Eligibility for Humanities EXCEL & Summer Humanities EXCEL You must be a currently enrolled UCSC student with a declared major or minor in the Humanities Division . Or, you are a proposed major or minor in the declaration process, are in progress with coursework, and you plan to declare by the end of the current academic year. You are in good academic and conduct standing (GPA 2.0 or higher). You are enrolled throughout the entire length of the experiential learning opportunity. For Summer Humanities EXCEL, you must be enrolled in the Fall Quarter. Students who graduate in June are not eligible for Summer Humanities EXCEL. Transfer students are encouraged to apply to build on their prior experiences and make new academic and professional connections at UCSC. Internships in Washington, D.C Ignite your passion and shape your future! Spend a quarter living and learning in Washington, D.C. with UCDC. The University of California, Washington Program supervises and supports students who pursue internships and academic study in the nation’s capital. The UCDC team provides great resources and staff support to help you land an internship there. The program is open to juniors and seniors (occasionally sophomores) in all majors through a competitive application process . Students enroll for the fall, winter, or spring quarter, earn 12-18 course credits, and remain registered as full-time UCSC students. Applicant selection is based on academic record, a written statement, a letter of recommendation, and possibly a personal interview. Fall, Winter, and Spring Opportunities exist and are great fits for Humanities majors! Internships in California’s Capital Spend a quarter studying and interning in the state capital with UC Center Sacramento! UC Center Sacramento offers a distinctive academic internship program in public policy that combines academics, research, and public service. UC Center Sacramento is the University of California’s teaching, research, and public service site, located one block from the State Capitol Building. Operated by UC Davis, UCCS offers distinctive public policy academic programs to students across the university’s 10-campus system. This quarter-long (summer, fall, winter, spring) program provides students with an opportunity to study through seminars and internships in and around the state Capitol.
