But, unfortunately, I lost interest before it could even start to fulfill the promise of its premise. The blurb says there’s a murder on the island and our main character and her orcas fall under suspicion. But at almost 40% in, there’s still no sign of that plotline. It’s just a lot of Lucy just walking around the island and then learning how to be the heiress. Even after the murder, the focus is more on the logistics of the island and running the business she inherited than the murder. The mystery behind the seals, the murders, and the wildlife disturbance constantly confuddled me, and I was always convinced of a new culprit by the next chapter. I loved the themes of women inheriting power, the impact of industrialization in nature, and the battle between greed and integrity. Lucy’s journey in recovering the Sanders business, solving two murders, and learning about her family was touching to read, and led me to wonder what I would have done in her shoes. I also loved reading Stacey Lee’s endnotes, which opened my eyes to the research and care that was put into writing this book. This being my first book from Stacey Lee, I am excited to read more from her in the future, and have high hopes for my next read! While this book has somewhat of a slow start, I found it such an interesting and fun read. Stacey’s writing is abundant in charm and I loved the atmospheric and emotional prose. The moody, gothic ambiance was the most compelling part of this book and the author does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of Nowhere and making everything not as it seems on the surface. Lucy was a strong and satisfying main character and I truly enjoyed getting to see her grow into her role and figure out the mysteries that plague Nowhere. The mystery in the story unwinds steadily and I enjoyed the tension that fills the space between all of the tenants of this island. As a historical (1918) novel, I think the author does an amazing job at portraying just how unnatural it is for a woman to come into such great fortune in a man’s world. I also enjoyed the slight romance that was sprinkled in amongst the chaos. The only reason I am not rating this higher is due to pacing, as I thought it a bit slow at the beginning and some points in the middle. Also, I did find some of the plot points to be predictable which isn’t necessarily bad, but could’ve been made better in my opinion. Otherwise, this was a great and eerie historical gothic mystery! Lucy Nowhere has spent her entire life on Orcas Island after being found as a baby washed ashore in a canoe. When a shocking death rocks the estate where she was raised—and Lucy suddenly finds herself at the center of everything—the quiet island quickly becomes a place where no one feels entirely safe. This story leans heavily into its setting, and that’s one of its biggest strengths. The foggy shoreline, whispered legends, and tight-knit island community create a moody, almost haunting atmosphere that pulls you in from the start. There’s a constant sense that the island itself is holding secrets. Lucy is a compelling main character, and her determination to uncover the truth gives the story a strong emotional backbone. The mystery unfolds steadily, with plenty of tension and suspicion along the way. While the pacing slows a bit in the middle and a few moments felt slightly predictable, the atmosphere and unique premise kept me invested. Overall, this was an engaging and eerie historical mystery that blends folklore, suspense, and a strong sense of place.
