Champ Score Updates
The New York Knicks are NBA champions. I repeat, the New York Knicks are NBA champions. This is not a drill. The 5th longest NBA championship drought of all-time has ended and the Knicks are on top of the basketball world. Leveraging this title and the combined power of their 9 teams, New York has moved into the top 3 in the champ index. This is New York's highest score since 2012. Shifting to the other end of the spectrum, the Carolina Hurricanes belong to Raleigh which has exactly one team, the Hurricanes. But that hasn't stopped them from winning, getting their 2nd Stanley Cup and achieving their all-time peak champ score. This has been an incredible run, with 9 straight years winning at least one playoff series.
Congrats to the Seahawks for winning their 2nd Super Bowl , and propelling Seattle back into the top 10 in the Champ city index. The city of Seattle was not without its championships since their last SB victory, as the Storm and Sounders each bagged 2 championships in that time period, which were reflected in their score. But among the "big 4" sports (for which they only had 2 teams for the majority of the drought), Seattle had very little to show since their Super Bowl XLVIII victory. But the future is now looking bright for Seattle with the Seahawks success, the Mariners recent success, the addition of the Kraken and the potential comeback of the SuperSonics. I would not be surprised to see them in the top 3 in the coming years. Boston on the other hand is rarely outside of the top 3. It seemed like they were on the fast track back to the top of the Champ city index, but it was not to be. Amongst the Drake Maye sacks, the Drake Maye sack fumbles and the Drake Maye pick 6, Boston's hopes for a big rise went down the tubes. Though with the NBA playoffs coming up, you can never count them out.
Congrats to the Dodgers for back-to-back World Series titles for the first time this century. With this title, the city of Los Angeles puts itself head and shoulders above every other sports city in the country, nearly 1.5 points higher than KC in second place. With 3 World Series, 2 MLS Cups, 1 Super Bowl and 1 NBA Title all since 2020, Los Angeles in the year 2025 is very close to cracking the all-time highest Champ scores leaderboard. A Super Bowl for the Rams or Chargers would be enough to do it. It is a poor consolation prize, the but Blue Jays did snap their 30 year World Series Appearance drought, and were participants in one of the most exciting World Series of all time. I hope we'll see them again in the near future.
Congrats to the Thunder and Panthers for winning the NBA and NHL titles in the past week. These titles have something surprising in common, in that they each elevate their city to their all-time peak in their respective sports histories, as calculated by the Champ score . For OKC it is easy to see why, as this is their first ever title by their only team. But for Miami , the combination of the back-to-back Stanley Cups, along with the 2 NBA Finals appearances since 2020 just barely edges their former peak in 2014, when the Lebron-led Heat lost to the Spurs in the Finals after winning their own back-to-back titles. In terms of the overall Champ score leaders, Miami shoots up into the top 3, right behind KC and LA , with the top spot in striking distance with another title. OKC ends up at #12, with a rise to the top 10 all but assured next season if the Thunder can keep up this level of play for another year.
The only chance KC had of making it back to the top of the Champ list was an unprecedented 3rd straight Super Bowl , but the Eagles had other plans, absolutely demolishing the Chiefs on the way to their 2nd Super Bowl title and 5th overall NFL Championship. With the win, Philly moves up to #7 on the Champ list, with KC remaining stuck at #2. Given the current team situations of the top 5 cities, it seems very unlikely that anybody is going to knock Los Angeles off the top spot anytime soon, but no reign lasts forever and they will eventually be overtaken. Will it be Philly? Boston ? NY ? Only time will tell.
