Tagore Memorial Hall, popularly called Tagore Hall, is one of Ahmedabad’s popular venues for dance, theatre and other performances. It is an architecturally-interesting building designed by master architect Balkrishna Doshi and executed by the well-known engineer Mahendra Raj. Tagore Memorial Hall, popularly called Tagore Hall, was designed around 1967 and the hall was open by 1971. Since then it has been one of Ahmedabad’s major venues for live performances. Tagore Hall shares the premises with the iconic Sanskar Kendra Museum, part of the cultural complex envisioned by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in the 1950s. The building is a concrete structure designed by Balkrishna Doshi. The large entrance offers access to the lobby with a transparent foyer. The large foyer is designed to enable interactions and discussions between performers, critics and the audience. The lobby offers access to the auditorium with a seating of 700 people in a bowl that is inserted like a separate independent structure. Those interested in architecture and engineering will note the use of folded plate structure by Mahendra Raj, an engineer known for his innovation and quality.
